I think artists* have a tough time when it comes to looking after their own websites. If they’re not using an outdated version of some gallery-style content managment system (CMS) they might be using a CMS that contains features they’ll never use. Or they might also be using a hosted CMS that let’s them muck around a lot. But what about backups and moving your site elsewhere? Can you get at all your data? No? That all seems a bit ridiculous to me.
I can wholeheartedly recommend ProcessWire as an excellent (free and open source) CMS for artists to manage their portfolio site.
Here are some features that may convince you:

Drag your image over straight from the Finder.

Order your work how you want – click, drag, done.

Don’t waste time in an image editor creating a custom thumbnail. Create one within the system in seconds.
